Adam Cook’s review:
Outcast is a Scottish horror film set on a rundown housing estate involving gypsies, curses and werewolves. This low budget effort benefits from a decent cast, particularly Kate Dickie as an over-protective and vicious mother, and uses the Edinburgh locations to good effect but it is far too aimless for long periods to truly be engaging.
Although I applaud it trying something different with the werewolf genre there are too many disparate elements that take up too much time for it to be truly satisfying. The teenage romance angle in particular takes a long time to get nowhere whilst the horror is disappointingly kept in the background. When it does make an appearance the special effects are surprisingly competent but the climax lacks bite.
