Adam Cook’s review:
This animated short from director, Jean-François Laguionie, is occasionally brilliant but too long and uneven to be considered a classic. Newlyweds set out to row across the Atlantic ocean. As the world events pass them by (quite literally on occasions as the Titanic sails passed in a scene that is both haunting and a little tasteless) their young love turns to resentment as they spend decades together in a small rowing boat.
Matching Laguionie’s distinctive visual style and surrealist flourishes, Rowing Across the Atlantic is certainly striking but only ever engaging in fits and starts. The ending is beautifully realised which does make up for some of the film’s earlier shortcomings but it is still hard to class this as one of his best films. Unfortunately I still can’t find an English subtitled version.
