Something Borrowed 2011

Watched Apr 06, 2012

The thought of the stars from He’s Just Not That Into You and Bride Wars teaming up in the same film is enough to bring me out in a cold sweat. Considering how a film starring both Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin could quite easily prompt a bout of mass suicides, Something Borrowed is surprisingly bearable. Of course it is still a terrible film on every conceivable level from the obnoxious characters to the predictable plot (including obligatory embarrassing drunken dance routine) but it isn’t quite as offensively bad as some recent romantic-comedies.

It’s hard to see why the intended target audience put up with these types of films: They are always manipulative, by-the-numbers and often morally dubious with truly detestable characters. Of course anything looks half-decent when you watch such cinematic abortions as Fred: The Movie in the same week but at least it didn’t make me want to drink a bottle of bleach afterwards, so I guess that’s something.

  • Your reviews of these awful films are so good that I almost feel like I'm missing out on something by avoiding them like the clappers. I'm going to put more rom-coms on my Netflix list!

  • Are you mad man? I watch these films so nobody else has to. They are supposed to be a warning against watching them not encouraging people to add them to their rental lists!

  • I was going to watch Winter's Bone tonight but I think I'll go for Miss Congeniality 2 instead ;)
