Adam Cook’s review:
A Cold War conspiracy thriller starring Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones should be a great way to spend two hours but this is disappointingly derivative and sluggishly paced. That is not to say it is a bad film, Gene Hackman is in good form as the sergeant on the run from his own kind and trying to solve a convoluted mystery. The rest of the cast are also perfectly decent whilst Andrew Davis’ (The Fugitive) direction is competent.
Sadly, the thriller aspect struggles to really drive the film forward. Involving a military cover-up and assassinations you would expect a taut, twisting and thrilling experience but the film only truly comes alive in fits and starts. Not that I am asking for a mindless action film (it would be a bit of a waste of Hackman’s talents) but it is a rather tired film in need of a bit more pep.
