The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior 2008 ★★

Watched Oct 31, 2012

After an incredibly rocky opening twenty minutes, featuring Randy Couture’s failed attempts at acting and woeful machismo fuelled posturing, the film actually settled down to be a vaguely entertaining direct-to-DVD release. I don’t want to oversell it, this is still a bargain basement film in every department from the shoddy special effects work to the clunky script, but it wasn’t half as bad as I was expecting.

The film bears little relation to either the Mummy franchise or the first Scorpion King movie. Instead it is like a cheap as chips adventure film closer to the likes of Sinbad or an epic Greek odyssey. So we get sexy witches, zombies, a minotaur and labyrinths for our heroes to battle through. Despite the fraction of the budget I actually enjoyed this more than both of the recent ...Titans movies - although that may be due more to rock bottom expectations than the film’s actual qualities. Still, it rattles along at a good pace and frequently throws up obstacles for the good guys so it is rarely boring.

Whilst I have no interest in watching it again it’s surely got to be better than my next film - Jersey Shore Shark Attack.
