Adam Cook’s review:
Sadly this is not one of Richard Fleischer’s best films. An on-form Lee Marvin plays a bank robber who takes three runaway teens under his wing to join his posse of one. Shot near the tail end of the Westerns height, this is a stale film that is too familiar and features some terrible performances.
Apart from Marvin, who could play this role in his sleep, the rest of the cast are a mixture of forgettable to the downright woeful. All three teens, played by Ron Howard, Gary Grimes and Charles Martin Smith, are flat and irritating and most of the problem is down to the acting. All three are far from great actors but these rank amongst their worst performances. The heavy moralising is annoying and whilst the characters descent and corruption in the second half provides a good counterpoint to the lighter opening it never quite gels. There are certainly worse Westerns but this is disappointingly forgettable.
