X-Men: First Class 2011 ★★★★

Rewatched Jul 04, 2012

I enjoyed it more on a re-watch.

I still agree with my original review that it is rushed, uneven and far from the film it could have been but it is a lot of fun with good performances and some strong set-pieces. It is less an X-Men film and more the Erik and Charles show but with Fassbender on such form it is hard to begrudge the lack of focus on the younger members.

  • I had the reverse effect on re-watch, liked it less but I brought it down from a 4.5 to a more reasonable 4 stars. the Charles/Erik relationship is brilliantly done though.

  • It was heavily hyped which is probably why I only gave it a solid 3 stars first time around. I'm certainly interested to see what they do with the sequel(s).

  • I think the sequel will have a much tighter script. I think it's obvious they mashed together the X-Men Origins: Magneto and Young X-Men scripts they were working on, so the script for the sequel should have a better focus from ground zero.

  • Yep, the opening half an hour definitely has strong traces of the Magneto spin-off. With Fassbender playing the role so well it is a shame we won't actually see his standalone film.

  • The Beast make-up is embarrassing and the whole "mutant and proud" thing is a bit cringe-worthy, but overall an awesome movie.

  • An opening sentence and one paragraph? You've changed.

  • lol. The original review I linked to is my usual length and seeing as most of that still stands I didn't see the point in posting yet another rambling review.
