50 Favourite Cinematographers
Although I have a nagging feeling I've missed somebody important off, here is my 50 favourite cinematographers and their most visually striking films. See the list view for the DoP names.
The list is in no particular order.
Haskell Wexler or GTFO.
Seriously though, fantastic list.
Wexler is a great suggestion. If this was a top 51 cinematographers list he'd probably have creeped on. ;-)
Awesome list. Kazuo Miyagawa and Guillermo Navarro are two names I'd probably include in a list like this one. I might ape your idea sometime. :P
I'm afraid I've copyrighted the idea so you will have to pay me a huge sum of money if you want to do your own version. The good news is I do take most payment methods.
I'll change the name of my list to The 50 best Directors of Photography in their best films, so I can defend myself in the courts.
You'd better lawyer up then as I'll be coming for you.
Wexler!
Nice. Some fine artists here. Did you consider Wally Pfister, Miroslav Ondříček, Barry Sonnenfeld, or Wolfgang Suschitzky?
'You better lawyer up asshole, because I'm not coming back for 30%. I'm coming back for EVERYTHING." -Eduardo Saverin when he sees Jeff Cronenweth isn't on the list.
Am I ever going to get over the warm and fuzzies I get whenever I see In the Mood for Love top any list?
@Steve Beckley: In truth I didn't consider any of those. Miroslav is a good suggestion but I wouldn't consider the other three top 50 material.
@Brian: lol. Cronenweth is very good and would no doubt have made a top 100 list if I had been foolish enough to compile such a list.
@Lise: Unfortunately the list is in no order. I just couldn't possibly rank these cinematographers.
Pin prick. Warm and fuzzies deflating now. You should have lied.
Sorry. If it is any consolation it would be near the top of the list if I had ranked it.
Harris Savides should be on here for The Game alone. I'd also add Newton Thomas Sigel for Usual Suspects and Drive.
Three Kings as well for Sigel. Incredibly versatile DP.
Oh and Michael Ballhaus (Goodfellas, Age of Innocence)
@Aaron: All fine DPs but I still prefer the original 50 on the list.
I always liked Harris Savides-Somewhere, Greenberg, Zodiac. shame he passed away. RIP
