Five Favourite Films from Every Genre
Using IMDb's categories I have attempted to list my five favourite films from each specific genre. To keep repeats down I have only included a film once despite some being able to fit into several potential categories.
The list of genres are as follows (it may be easier to change to list view to follow the ranking and genre):
Action
Adventure
Animation
Biography
Comedy
Crime
Documentary
Drama
Family
Fantasy
Film-Noir
History
Horror
Independent
Music
Musical
Mystery
Romance
Sci-Fi
Short
Sport
Thriller
TV mini-series
War
Western
This is a great idea. I think I would find it a lot easier to do this than to just try and do a list of my 100 favourite films, which I think would drive me completely insane.
Great list, too!
Fantastic concept, I'm headed straight to Youtube to check out your top pick for short, looks like exactly my kind of thing.
Once again, a brilliant idea Adam. But please - boycott animation as a genre! Animation is a method for filmmaking and the films should be regarded on their own.
Thank you all for the kind words.
@Jacob: I agree 100% but I stuck doggedly to the IMDb categories (Independent isn't a genre either, for example).
Nice list. Unfortunately I can't find any sign of Dead Man’s Letters or Konstantin Lopushansky on Netflix :(
You won't. You'll even struggle to get hold of official DVD releases of Lopushansky's films. Sadly he is one of the great unsung directors of Russian cinema.
@Adam: True, but Independent isn't an IMDb genre anyway... Of course you do as please, especially since you obviously was aware of this in the first place. I guess I just feel stronger about this than most. ;-)
RE: Independent as a genre - It is. Check this page (half way down on the left hand side), that is where I got the 'genres' they use on the site.
However, you will have no argument from me that animation is a method rather than a genre. It is like having 'colour' or 'silent' as a genre.
I see, that's where you found them. I used this page when searching for my favorites, and there it's missing. My bad!
I forgive you. It does seem strange that the two pages have different criteria though.
Wouldn't Dog Day Afternoon be a biographical rather than a historical film?
Great list, by the way.
Great list...no way would I be able to make a list like this..I cant even get passed my top 15 (maybe I could go to 20)...passed that its all depending on what day it is.
@Kevin: Dog Day Afternoon fits both criteria but because I had a self imposed rule of no repeats I ended up moving it to the historical 'genre'.
Excellent list - realise how many highly rated film I still haven't seen. :S
@Kevin: I think everybody feels that way. I know I've still got a long list of films I really should watch.
