Hairspray 2007 ★★★½

Rewatched Jul 06, 2012

I remember seeing this film when it came out at the cinema and absolutely beaming once I left the screen. I saw this film with my whole family because the original Hairspray is my Dad's favourite film, so naturally he wanted to see how this would compare.

This film is full of fun and definitely one that will make you want to get up out of your seat and dance! It is heavily based on the musical (which I have not seen but can tell I would love) with original songs and dance routines. What I love most about this film is how true to the original script it is with quotes such as, "This show isn't filmed in cinema-scope". It is such a witty and timeless classic which this film definitely draws upon. The songs are so catchy and tell the story perfectly, the acting is wonderful to watch and ultimately the story is one that will inspire all. Such songs that will stick with you are "I can hear the bells" and You can't stop the beat", just amazingly camp.

Brilliant choice of actors as well. John Travolta holds himself well dressed as a woman and conveys a lot more feminine traits than Divine ever did in the original. And Zac Efron is a brilliant singer and dancer, just perhaps not the best actor. But like I said before, each character resembles the original cast perfectly and allows for the audience to connect with them emotionally.

Alas, nothing will beat the original for me though...
