Seems like Mike Judge can only make under-rated films. This was a nice bit of character comedy. Race to beat the sweatpants, trash-talking assembly line workers. Did a good job of being goofy and satirically funny and still being grounded. The ending is weak and unsatisfying and perhaps for most audiences that erases how well done the rest of the film is.
Not many people could play the Jason Bateman role. He remains fundamentally likeable. They probably needed someone like that in the wife role too, instead of Kristen Wiig. In general, her character's underdeveloped and that's why the ending, when we finally start seeing scenes with her and without Bateman's character, feels off.
Watched after it was recommended in an outshot on Bullseye several months ago. Found it on Netflix streaming when I couldn't sleep last night.
John commented on their own review of The Dresser
Watched because arson Welles talked about it in the My Lunches with Orson book. I think he was offered directing? Sir? Anyway, I remember saying he wanted to cast Michael Caine in the dresser role.
