I felt really pathetic after finishing this.

  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 2013

    ★★½ Watched 29 Dec, 2013

There were way too many parts of this movie that felt like I was watching someone play a video game - the barrel scene, especially, had that special mixture of contrived action acrobatics and unbalanced comedy/action tones that stretch suspension of disbelief just a little too far. I know the film must have been entertaining because the 161 minutes went by in no time, but in retrospect, it's a very flawed film. That has nothing to do with any deviations…

  • City of God 2002

    ★★★★ Watched 22 Dec, 2013

Two years after the fact I've indulged a friend and watched this. I avoided checking it out more to be a nuisance than for any genuine lack of interest in the film or subject matter, but I've got to didn't dissapoint, which is to say, it was exactly what I expected it to be, which is to say, it was good.
Oh, I mean, it's nothing especially spectacular. As studies, the characters aren't particularly fascinating, nor is the perspective they're…

I really liked this movie. Gave me phobias I'd never even considered, and that kind of psychological sway - whether the intent of the creator or not - is a mark of great filmmaking. It's not the 2deep4u sort of artfilm I'd been anticipating, but it was as far from schlock as a blockbuster can get. Biggest issue I've seen mentioned in criticism was inappropriate casting; I didn't get that at all. Bullock and Clooney are great in their roles.
Lots of well-directed panic from an extremely personal and affecting perspective, would highly recommend.
    Woof woof.

  • A Serious Man 2009

    ★★★★½ Watched 12 Jul, 2013

Considering I'm an unmarried, Australian gentile with no siblings who has never had an unfaithful partner, this film cut really close to home. Not in a kinda dead family pet or coming-of-age type of way, but more in a "sudden realisation of great ennui" sort of way. It's not a comedy of manners, it's a comedy of habits. If I'm even a little bit successful in communicating what I'm trying to say here, you already know whether or not you…

  • Safety Not Guaranteed 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 21 Oct, 2012

I think this might have been one of the blindest watches I've ever experienced. Going into the cinema - a venture taken only because I had nothing else to do today, and today I felt like seeing a movie - all I knew was that Aubrey Plaza played the protagonist.
Man was this ever a pleasant surprise.
Yes, the indie quirk reflects in the film like the aftertaste of store bought cola reminding you that this isn't coke, and yes,…
