I love David Cronenberg and nearly all of his films. Of late, with Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method, it seemed that he might be transitioning to telling some more straightforward stories. Well that's definitely not the case. Cosmopolis is unlike any other film from 2012, or any year. The uniquely hypnotizing dialogue kept me transfixed throughout the film but also on-edge.
Once I realized that the film was (literally?) going nowhere and that the plot was non-existent, I was able to sit back and get lost in Cronenberg's typically great cold style, DeLillo's absurdist words (I watched much of the film with the subtitles on, in awe of his use of the English language) and Pattinson's mesmerizing performance (the supporting actors are almost all great too).
This film absolutely won't be for everyone, but I expect it to be especially rewarding on multiple viewings. Lastly, it's always great to watch a film that feels so essentially Canadian (Cronenberg has had a great influence on defining the look, tone and feel of Canadian filmmaking. Further aided in this case with a predomiantly Canadian or European cast and being filmed in Toronto). Greatly looking forward to hearing the director's commentary.
