Tim Otto’s review:
Vivid and colorful depiction of the short lifes of several inhabitants of the so called "City of God". The film uses innovative techniques and visuals to draw the viewer into the hectic atmosphere without ever indulging in it's own visual overkill.
The movie refrains from becoming too depressing and the use of the protagonist as a narrator gives the whole thing a more positive and natural feel, as to the kid everything that happens around him is normal. It is up to the viewer to make up his mind about what is happening, it is never dictated how you should feel about what you should see.
