I just don't get it
Films that are considered classics and/or are very highly rated by most people but somehow have failed to make the same impression on me.
I don't dislike most of those movies, just can not see what is the big deal.
I'm not a huge fan of Fight Club and The Matrix (but I can totally see why people are), but I absolutely love Rear Window and Blade Runner. And Double Indemnity (which I actually watched for the first time just a couple of days ago) is a masterpiece. The greatest film noir of them all, in my opinion.
If you don't like Double Indemnity, you don't like noir. Which, of course, is fair enough, not everyone does.
@ Richard: I can totally see why people would love all of these movies, but somehow they do not appeal to me at all.
@Thomas: Weird thing is, I like noir and watch a fair share of noir films, but this one just seemed a bit run of the mill to me. I could predict most of the turns and character developements, as they are the most basic noir twists. And somehow I enjoy the nastier B-noirs more than the ones of higher caliber.
That is weird, haha. Which ones do you like, then?
Blade Runner I agree with - I should absolutely love it considering its genre, cast, director and the story it is adapted from, but its just not a five star film. All the other films however I've granted four and a half stars.
@ Thomas: I like the noirs of John Huston, Fritz Lang, Otto Preminger and Robert Siodmak.
@ Dan: Yeah I also have no idea why it doesn't appeal to me, it has everything I love, but still just bores me to be honest. For the others, Fight Club was just overly stylish and blunt in its themes, and the ending was laughable. I guessed the twist of Usual Suspects a few minutes in and the impact was lessened. The Matrix is a decent action movie, but I guess I am too young to really be cought up in the hype around this film. Reservoir Dogs ust bored me to tears, I didn't even finish it, and I tried several times.
Rear Window I will watch again soon. At the time I thought it was too slow paced, but I think now I will be able to appreciate the craft more, and I will probably love it.
I thought you said B ;)
Well I guess most of these are a big deal as far as noirs go, but to me they have a very gritty and "dirty" feeling to them that Double Indemnity just did not have, it felt too glossy.
