John Carter 2012 ★★★½

Watched Jul 04, 2012

Having heard little but bad press I was expecting a true failure of a move here. How pleasantly surprised I was to find a half decent popcorn flick that allowed me to turn off my brain for a few hours and sit back, relax and enjoy a good old fashioned action adventure.

Granted JC of Mars has a few flaws, it's biggest fault is not its own, but as the film is based on stories 100 years old it all feels a little familiar after Star Wars, Avatar and years of sci-fi but look last this and realise that the E.R. Burroughs tales of John Carter massively influenced modern sc-fi and there's a great little film here.

I was impressed with Pixar guru Andrew Stantons direction, long sweeping shots and a fairly emotional scene involving the fate of Carters Earth family show he can manage live action, but felt he might have made more I the climactic battle which seemed a little rushed.

Overall I enjoyed this one and it looked stunning on blu-ray. It's a shame we'll probably not get a sequel (maybe a reboot) due to the loss Disney suffered on this one. I for one would go see it.

  • I'm hoping we will get a 2nd film, I really enjoyed this, like you I was ready for a pile of S***! But we all really enjoyed it, I'll get the Blu Ray for this. It's a film which warrents it!
The soundtrack is superb as well, one of the best this year!

  • Yes I forgot to mention the score. Michael Giacchino does knock out some good ones.
