The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011 ★★★★

Watched Mar 03, 2012

I’ve not read the book, nor seen the original Swedish adaptation, but I generally enjoy Fincher’s less showy work (Zodiac remains a favourite), and found much to admire here. Rooney Mara disappears into her role, unrecognisable as the spurned girlfriend from The Social Network. A few ropey European accents aside (yes, Alan Dale), and notwithstanding the inevitable simplifications and deviations from its source material, this is a stark, handsome film that benefits greatly from its snowy, unfamiliar setting, only losing its footing as it rushes to play out the last few story beats.
