Remakes don't need to suck
It's such a constant cineaste moan that it's become boring, blah blah remakes blah lack of imagination blah... sure remakes are often the sign of a failure of imagination, and originality should be prized. However not only is there nothing wrong with a good cover version, some remakes have transcended the originals.
I'm going to try and avoid the obvious in this list, so don't suggest I add The Fly or The Thing, we all know they rule.
If not Aja's Hills Have Eyes, how about Piranha? Jerry O'Connell's 'wet t-shirt' line kills me.
The Thing
Dawn of the Dead
The Last House on the Left
The Wizard of Oz
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Ransom
True Lies
War of the Worlds
Chloe
Unfaithful
True Grit
The Thomas Crowne Affair
Brothers
And the incredible TV series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
I'd say The Woman in Black. That new version was magnificent.
And The Social Network was way superior to Citizen Kane. (I'm sorta joking here, but those two have a LOT in common. TSN is basically an updated version of CK. Incredibly similar.)
Oh, and the Fright Night-remake was a whole lot of fun.
Traffic? Soderbergh manages to cover an entire TV mini-series without leaving you feeling like you've been robbed.
i'm confused as to why Heat is on here. is that a remake?
night of the living dead remake is excellent
@jeff - Yeah, Heat is a remake of LA Takedown, a TV movie also directed by Michael Mann.
I enjoyed the King Kong remake in 2005....like a lot.
