Superb debut from writer/director Dee Rees, a former intern of Spike Lee's. Gripping coming-of-age drama about an African American teenager coming to terms with her lesbian identity amidst social and family pressures. Beautifully shot, honestly acted, and so much more subtle than so many much-ballyhooed dramas that get much more attention and Oscar notice.
