This was the last film left in my quest to watch all the Best Picture Oscar winners! I'm not sure how I managed to go this long without seeing it. Maybe it's because I don't really like Kevin Costner.

That said, I did enjoy this film. I didn't think it was brilliant (certainly, it's no Goodfellas) but it was interesting and moving at times. No doubt the kind of mutually positive white-Native encounter portrayed here happened all too infrequently, but it's the kind of idealized version of the story we wish could have been more realistic. Graham Greene is wonderful as Kicking Bird, and Costner gives one of his better performances. The love story between Dances with Wolves and Stands with a Fist is a bit boring, but the movie doesn't spend too much time on it.

It'll be a while before I get over what happened to Two Socks.
