The Place Beyond the Pines 2013

★★★★ 1

If asked who would play me in a film of my life, it'd definitely be Ryan Gosling. He has the right amount of rugged good looks, boyish charm and underlying menace to almost pull it off.

Fully tatted up here, and a two bit hoodlum his actions echo throughout this film. Very much a tale of 3 acts, it has the feel of the epic to it, instantly recalling such films as Sleepers, Once Upon a Time in America and Mystic River. Mistakes rattling down the generations, ripples echoing through time with the original action acting as that stone in the lake.

I feel this was a bit overlooked, not much fanfare, but I think it will become a bit of a classic, like those others. Great performances, beautiful cinematography and a seriously heavyweight narrative.

mentazm commented on Adam Cook’s review of Stoker

I can definitely understand your viewpoint on this one Adam, as it's easy to get annoyed by Chan-Wook's over-reliance on visual flair, but the threadbare story helped balance that out. Definitely a film sown together by it's performances.

Stoker 2013

★★★★

The posh 'Fish Tank' starring the female Tobey Maguire, with a light spattering of violence.

The Stokers are a bit like the Adams family. However they are not stinky or smelly, and the certainly CAN afford a telly. Ozzie ginger's old man dies in mysteriously circumstances and the creepy uncle moves in. Is his lust for a ready made family all there is to him?

I think it paid off going into this film knowing very little other than the stars and director. I'd even forgot it was by Chan-Wook up until the credits rolled, which contained another surprise. This is written by Wentworth Miller of Prison Break fame. He should DEFINITELY give up the day job, because combined with Chan-Wook's visual flair, this is a story that will stay with me for a while.

I lent my dad my copy of the book, he found it .... disagreeable.

Interstella 5555 The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem 2003

★★★

Riding the current wave of Daft Punk love pouring from most quarters, I decided to finally give this a watch.

The music reminded me of a time when they weren't self indulgent, but were right on the cusp, having just discovered their beloved damn vocoder that led them on a seemingly 10 year love affair. One More Time, nah. think we've heard enough of that vocoder now guys. Time to bin it.

The visuals are charming enough, the story taking an interesting turn about halfway through, just as I was starting to get bored. One for the hardcore fans really.

I watched Jack Reacher last night.

Why? I do not know. The film itself was just as forgettable, but solid and workmanlike. Like a good paved driveway. Or something just as manly.

Rewatch as I'm going to see the new one this week.

I actually enjoyed this a lot more on the smaller screen, felt more personal somehow.

The genius of the casting, Pegg aside, really stood out for me this time. Ohura, Spock, Chekov and Bones spot on.
