Contact 1997 ★★★★

Rewatched Jun 23, 2012

Myself and a friend were discussing this film the other day, and I got remembering how much I loved it when I was younger. I never read the book, but I hear it's even better, so perhaps I will one day.

Going back for a rewatch for the first time in about 10 years was an experience. The cracks are definitely starting to show, but some of the visual design stands up well such as the machine humanity assembles, and it looks glorious at times in hidef.

I was definitely less tolerant of the script-writing 101 on display here now I have more experienced with film watching. Several times false obstacles are set up to generate fake tension when the plot is flagging. Then there's the whole middle section with the romance that just felt unnecessary giving the huge message the film carries.

Not a sci-fi classic by any stretch, but a heartfelt plea to humanities better side to unite, get off this rock, and evolve.
