Transcendent Man 2009 ★★★★

Watched Feb 15, 2012

As a lifelong lover of technology, counter-culture and sci-fi I've been aware of transhumanism since I was a child, but the last I had really read up on the subject was Robert Warwichs 'Rise of the Robots' in 2004.

Warwick is featured in Transcendent Man, but the show is all Ray Kurzweil's. I had no idea Kurweil, the future theorist who's theories I had heard espoused by techologists for years was the creator of so many gadgets that I actually know and some I have used. Kurzweil keyboards as well as the first flatbed scanner, reading devices for the blind, and now a pocket reader for mobile phones that reads a photo.

Kurweil's belief in a beatiful shiny biotech society run by a benelovent AI many million of times smarter than we are is not in line with what many other futurists believe. The singularity will not be the next stage of human evolution but, more likely given how we look at other lifeforms, our extinction event.
