  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit 1988

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 23 Apr, 2016

Watched it for the first time in about 20 years (or possibly more). I'd forgotten just how much of a proper film noir Roger Rabbit actually is, admittedly with added slapstick violence and a cast of cartoon characters.

Bob Hoskins absolutely nails the role of washed up alcoholic PI Eddie Valiant and while there's plenty to entertain younger audience members there's also an enjoyably dark seam running right through the film which raises Who Framed Roger Rabbit far above the usual big budget family fare.

  • Hellboy

    Hellboy 2004

    ★★★½ Watched 21 Apr, 2016

Strip away the flashy visuals and directorial flourishes and Hellboy is actually a fairly generic superhero film, admittedly with some excellent action set pieces. The extra half star is for Ron Perlman's absolutely outstanding performance in the title role.

Depending on which of the two types of martial arts movie plot you prefer (fighting your way through a tournament to avenge the death/injury of your friend/relative or learning a new martial arts technique from an old master to avenge the death/injury of your friend/relative) then either this or Kickboxer is Van Damme's best film. Although he should have won two best actor Oscars for Double Impact, obviously.

    Simply incredible.

    And awful.

    And amazing.

    And dreadful.

    I want a garfield phone.
