  • Is It Just Me? 2010

    ★★★ Watched 26 Apr, 2013

Enjoyable film with some nice characters, especially the older guy. It's one of those films that contain my pet hate: a plot device where there is a confusion of identities, and rather than just say "oh you know what? There's been a misunderstanding. Let me explain..." As most normal people would, our hero concocts a confusing and pointless lie to get around it. Yes, I know there would be no film without it, but it just seems silly. But once you get over that it's kind of good fun.

  • Longhorns 2011

    ★★½ Watched 25 Apr, 2013

Warm-hearted fluffy gay rom-com with lower than average production values and the occasional embarrassing moment due to over-acting, but with a funny script which keeps you watching. Not great, but not bad either.

Surely director Darren Aronofsky intended this to be a homage to the great Roman Polanski? The similarities, stylistically and narratively, to both Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion are evident throughout. Natalie Portman is superb as a prima ballerina obsessed with the idea that fellow ballerina Mila Kunis might be a better performer than her, or worse, might actually want to become her. Portman's character reminded me of both heroines of the two Polanski films, being very mouselike and shy, almost apologetic…

I didn't get it. Obviously I'm not sophisticated enough. What were the giant pigs? I'm a simple man who likes a straight forward plot. I think I'll give up on these arty much loved critically acclaimed films and go back to Star Wars where I belong. Disappointing.
