    I thought this would be one of those films very much aimed at young children with nothing much to offer adults, but I was so very wrong. And how glad am I?

    Paddington was one of the first books I ever read as a child and I grew up not obsessed with him, but with great love. The animated series in the 1970s was perfect, and I can still hum the theme tune. :-)

    Tonally it reminded me of some of the great weird Australian films of the 1970s, such as Picnic at Hanging stock but unfortunately nowhere near as good.

    Surely director Darren Aronofsky intended this to be a homage to the great Roman Polanski? The similarities, stylistically and narratively, to both Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion are evident throughout. Natalie Portman is superb as a prima ballerina obsessed with the idea that fellow ballerina Mila Kunis might be a better performer than her, or worse, might actually want to become her.
