Sucker Punch 2011 ★★

Zack Snyder lost me with this one, a messy, self-indulgent mess devoid of all logic. For a movie built on admitted fantasy sequences to work, there needs to be a level of reality from which the fantasy can spring. Snyder never manages to achieve that, and as a result it's difficult to have any kind of empathy for the protagonists. I would love to have been thrilled by all the flying dragons and robots and bullet trains, but Snyder stages it all with a heavy-handed reminder that this is all happening in some girl's mind, so ultimately who cares?
