Django Unchained 2012
brilliant. Entertaining from start to finish.

The Avengers 2012
Like a Michael Bay movie only slightly better. Difficult for any movie to live up to the hype & expectation of this movie, & this one is no exception. Have much preferred the individual Marvel movies, especially Ironman which sets the bar in the superhero genre.

The Dark Knight Rises 2012
I think Christopher Nolan must have bored of the franchise by the time he got to the third. Feels very formulaic with nothing new to bring to the story or storytelling. Tom Hardy is wasted behind a mask. Time for someone else to have a go a Batman.

Looper 2012
One of the better & logically-self-consistent time-travel genre movies I have seen. But no one to root for (the protagonist is a nihilistic psychopathic killer) & nothing much to ponder about when it finished. For me the ultimate measure of a movie is whether I want to see it again at some point & the answer on this one is NO.

Silver Linings Playbook 2012
well done. Trailer almost put me off, but the movie delivers much more than expected. Acting & directing first class

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012
Meh. Nothing to write home about. A little disappointed

Prometheus 2012
Great visual spectacle. Not much in the way of emotional engagement. Story was pretty so-so. Loved the sets. The sign of a good movie for me is that I intend to see it again but this one doesn't make it onto the list.

Moonrise Kingdom 2012
Wes Anderson brings his trademark quirkiness to his latest movie with slightly mad characters, lots of attention-to-detail in his lovely sets, great camera-work & a sweet story. But there's little in the way of character development, and the other than the 2 main characters there is not much developed in the cast's relationships. My fav of his still Steve Zissou by a long way.

Life of Pi 2012
Enjoyed the book much more so than the movie. Doesn't translate well.

The Hunger Games 2012
Pretty good rendition of the book & limits in the film can mostly be traced back to the source material; relative shallowness in plot & a less-than-inspiring ending to what started as a strong story. However the film can have been much stronger if the director had a better feel for action sequences which were pretty lacklustre. All in all nothing to write home about.
