The Amazing Spider-Man 2012 ★★★★

Reviewed Jul 12, 2012

A surprisingly great addition to the marvel movie stable and a worthwhile "reboot" of the spidey franchise. Garfield is the best Peter Parker to-date bringing heart, charm and humour to the role - and paired with Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey make for a terrific on-screen romance that has heart and emotion in ways that Raimi's Parker and Mary-Jane never had. Mark Webb surprises in the action sequences which have real weight and thrill with a fluidity not really seen in the earlier movies. The first hour perhaps suffers from familiarity (it doesn't deviate that much from the origin story we all watched only ten years ago) but is set-up for stellar second chapter - especially if we're heading for a full telling of the Gwen Stacey saga as seems to be implied.
