Maniac 2013
Impressive retooling of Bill Lustig's grotty slasher favourite - surprisingly faithful, but with a slick/sick modern vice and groovy bleeping music. Great POV technique and effects, but the film's (and star Elijah Wood's) biggest achievement is making us feel genuine sympathy for mad, scalping, mannequin-loving Frank.

Pieta 2013
A typically dark, disturbing mix of psychological torment and visceral unpleasantness, Kim Ki-Duk's latest explores the strange relationship between a violent mob enforcer and a mysterious woman who claims to be his long-lost mother. There are some twists to the narrative towards the end that are a bit disappointingly conventional, but the direction, performances and general uncompromising atmosphere still make it a compelling watch.

The Sweeney 2013
Shut it you fackin' cunt!

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 2013
Second part of this animated Frank Miller adaptation. Doesn't have quite the sense of dark, looming chaos that the book does but it's still a rousing, enjoyable piece of work.

Storage 24 2013
Pacy, reasonably entertaining British sci-fi horror - it's all very generic, but the direction and performances are solid enough, it's got a cool monster and a few surprisingly funny moments. Plus, like all decent B-movies, it's over in 85 minutes.

Holy Motors 2012
By turns brilliant, baffling, beautiful and bonkers, I maybe didn't love Holy Motors quite as much as some but it does contain some of the year's most amazing scenes, plus the greatest blues accordion jam in cinema history. One that's sure to seem even better on subsequent viewings, it's a truly unique vision - and you can't say that about many films.
-
The Thieves 2012
Hugely enjoyable - if slightly overlong - continent-hopping Korean crime caper, with engaging performances and some knock-out suspense sequences.
-
Looper 2012
Smart, strong, muscular time-traveling thriller.... simultaneously ambitious and pleasingly small scale, with much of the action taking place in a corn field. It doesn't waste much time on the logic of the situation but instead provides an emotional weight often lacking from this sort of high-concept sci-fi flick. Gordon-Levitt and Willis are good, but both are outshone by Jeff Daniel's grumpy gang boss.

Vulgaria 2012
Scrappy but often funny Hong Kong comedy about a struggling film producer forced to mount a modern remake of a 70s porn classic on the demands of his Triad bankrollers. Despite the often raunchy material, it's actually quite a sweet, heartwarming tale that also serves as a knowing satire on the current state of Hong Kong filmmaking.
