Your father was a very secretive man, Peter.

I am in shock at how good this film was and at the decisions that were made in doing the reboot. Those decisions are what makes the film so good. I have to say that I think this film is better then the first Spider-Man. Was a reboot necessary? No, but who cares. I don't watch films because they are necessary, I watch them to be entertained.
The decisions made that surprised me is that the film probably has less action, less villains and less characters in general then Spider-Man 3. So obviously if all you want is more action and villains you're not going to like this much.
What you do end up with though is a film filled with characters I actually give a damn about compared to the 2002 Spider-Man. Now I want to say I actually quite enjoy Sam Raimi's take on the Wall Crawler, might even love those films, ok the first two anyways. One thing though, remember how the movie lit up when Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson were together on the screen? If you say "yes" you're a liar. Here though Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy are actually fun to watch together on the screen. There's a chemistry there that was totally missing from all the previous films and actually makes you think these two are excited to be together.
The rest of the cast is pretty fantastic too. Rhys Ifans plays a villain that is the most sympathetic since Doc Ock. Sally Field and Martin Sheen play Aunt May and Uncle Ben as real people as opposed to the ideal grand-parent caricatures from the first film. Denis Leary is Denis Leary, and I love him for it.
So the reason I think this is so great is because I feel the characters and acting are superior then all three previous films, with Alfred Molina being the exception. It just feels like a more personal film with much more heart then the original trilogy. I know that's not what people want to hear... they want to hear that it's better because there's more action and special FXs, but just remember the last time we got that we ended up with Spider-Man 3.
@Frank, Fast Company has a great DC vs Marvel section in this months issue and based on their sidebars, Sony still holds rights to Spiderman and 20th Century Fox still holds rights to Xmen, Fantastic Four, Daredevil and all it's respective spin offs (Electra).
Both studios are expected to keep the rights by rolling out new movies: Xmen First Class 2, the Wolverine (an extension of the Wolverine solo franchise, supposedly picking up Wolverine's stint in Japan - a storyline pulled from the comics) and an Amazing Spiderman sequel.
If the only way FOX and Sony will never loose the rights to Spider-Man and X-Men if the only loop hole is if they stop making films. You'd think it would expire at some point, even if Marvel wasn't planning on making their own films would it not make sense to expire after while so it can be renegotiated or brought to another company if you don't like how the current company is treating you characters? I dunno. I just think it would be cool to see Spider-Man and Wolverine show up in an Avengers film down the line.
@Russ: I have no idea if such things are public knowledge.
@MONIROM: I'm just happy The Wolverine has a competent director this time around.
I like that they took the time to keep the sequels in mind while setting this all up.
It's kinda obvious some scenes where cut out though. Like the cops that get turned into lizard men and then you don't see them again.
apart from when they were turning back to normal after the cure went out
Yeah, I meant in between that... can't help but think there was more to it. Not a knock on the movie though. Just sayin lol
I LOVED THIS! Almost more then (500) Days of Summer. :P Seriously though I love (500) Days of Summer. And this.
We liked (500) Days of Summer too. It was different. I wouldn't have know that Marc Webb would make a good director for a comic book movie by watching that though, but I'm happy Sony went with him. He did a great job.
I will admit that we liked 500 Days as well.
