The Running Man 1987 ★★★½

Who loves you and who do you love?
Damon Killian

I'm not sure how they pulled it off, but it seems that in 1987 they made a satire about Reality Television. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's almost impossible to watch this movie today and not notice the enormous similarities to how Reality TV is run today. Sure it's taken to extremes, but that's actually what a satire usually does.

Now I love Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's made some of my all time favorite action movies. I can enjoy almost anything he's in, even his less then stellar accomplishments. I have to admit however that Richard Dawson steals the show for me here. I'm sure they thought casting the former host of Family Feud in this role was a great idea, but I'm also sure they had no idea just how great Dawson would be in the role.

The odd part about all this is that the action ends up being the weakest part of the film including the finale. It doesn't help that movies like Predator and RoboCop came out the same year. For what it lacks in good action though it makes up for it in personality. Still love this movie for what it is.
