Oh man, what can I say about this film? It essentially is a fragment of an idea that the writer must have taken from the story used in the film about an island colony that just disappears.
It starts off really creepily and quickly you understand it relates to light and dark. But once we get beyond that, there are so many inconsistencies.
There is no coherent reason why the survivors have continued to survive and all attempts to avoid death are so drawn out that you want them to die.
No reason why a guy knows that people can be tricked, no purpose to the film. This might have worked as a short but not a feature.
What is most annoying (apart from the ending) is that the story used earlier in the film which is sold as a mystery isn't even one in real life. Check it out on Wikipedia. Croatoan is so mundane as to make the creation of this film redundant.
I heard it cost 10 million to make, took something like 20 thousand in the US and scraped to 1 million worldwide.
I'm really not surprised. I am sure all the people that saw it at the cinema wished they too had been swept away by a supernatural force before the end.
So disappointing, huh, especially when you consider it's from Brad Anderson? Nice premise, badly realised... I only gave it 2 stars, and you know how generous I am with my ratings ;)
I wasn't that massive a fan of Machinist, because the twist was obvious a mile off, or maybe that was the point. What else did he do, quick IMDB later, oh yeah, I really liked Session 9 as it was nicely creepy and Transsiberian really took me by surprise.
I agree Phil. You generous? Mr 3.5 Stars is what we should be calling you from now on if I am Mr 2 Pints.
This film did suck. Great review.
Thanks G-man, just noticed your comment.
