Though on the surface this appears to be Payne's least cynical film, it may be his darkest, or at least his least-happy ending.
Above all, it's a great satire on the pettiness of high-school elections (or elections and politicking in general) and social climbing, with wonderful performances from Broderick and Witherspoon.
