ndoane’s review:
Watching the beginning of the movie I thought I was going to have to go back and watch a bunch more Kubrick. I thought the training stuff on the island was mesmerizing. It's interesting because I have either seen or heard most of those lines, but watching them in context, it really works. And yes D'Onofrio was very good - although I thought him snapping could have been developed a little more. The problem was that once the movie shifted to Vietnam, it lost my interest. I thought all the performances there were weak, there was only a marginal story, and it didn't seem like Kubrick had a good vision anymore. Maybe if Modine had been a better actor they could have succeeded in showing the psychological torture that war inflicts on the survivors.
