Formally, the movie is a total mess. It makes no sense and the plot is totally disjointed and contrived - plus it in no way serves the stated mission of the film. The magic of the film comes from the sheer unadulterated chaos of its making. An unforgettable cinematic experience.

    Messiah of Evil 1973

    ★★★½ Rewatched

The squares are out to eat the weirdos in this oddball Lovecraftian tale from the same folks who brought you the Howard the Duck movie. The residents of a small California town inexorably transform into a pack of ravenous ghouls while waiting for the return of a 'dark stranger' from the ocean. Mostly an atmospheric horror film in the vein of Carnival of Souls but two amazing murder set pieces - one in a supermarket and the other in a cinema - add a bit of exploitation flair. Highly recommended for fans of the weird.

Raimi, Jodorowsky, and Lynch in the Shaw Brothers' blender with black magic and kung fu. Inexplicably weird, it must be seen to be believed. Simultaneously horrendous and amazing. It will definitely break your brain a little bit.

While still a curiosity at best, Neil Young’s super-weird, post-apocalyptic, goof-ball film is highly entertaining – particularly if you just space out and don’t expect too much from it. I kind of wish the whole film was about Devo’s weirdo, irradiated rock band characters though. Also, coked-up Dennis Hopper has a great rapport with a raccoon that he feeds pancakes to.
