One of the greatest of the usually entertaining 80s teen film genre, it captures the spirit of being a teenager perfectly: rebellion for the purpose of figuring out who you are, and the tension this creates with the prejudices and fears of society. Carried by a brilliant Christian Slater performance - he somehow makes what should be the cringiest of plotlines (a shy white boy called 'Harry Hard On' telling it like it is via pirate radio) both convincing and inspiring. Supported by a brilliant soundtrack too.
