Heart of a Dragon 1985 ★★★★

Watched Jun 26, 2012

There is an awful lot to be said for Heart of the Dragon. It’s an oddity of 80s era Jackie Chan for many reasons, his performance is subdued and he doesn’t sing the incredibly literal theme song. The same is true of Sammo Hung, he doesn’t fight and he plays a man child. It’s a bizarre image to see Sammo dressed as a kid, with a bowl cut, holding hands with Jackie Chan - Heart of the Dragon, pre rain man's rain man. The action choreograph by Yuen Biao is rough, someone is near enough decapitated and there's plenty of spade violence. Who knew a spade could be the source of the films best gag? Obliqueness and contrariness aside, this is one of the many great Jackie Chan films of the 80s.
