Ammar’s review published on Letterboxd:
Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy, Chalize Theron, Hugh-Keaye Burns, and Nicholas Hoult. Mad Max is the reboot to the hit 1980s franchise starring Mel Gibson. A women helps a group of women escape the wrath of a godlike figure who needs them to reproduce his future soldiers. The character Max gets caught in the middle of all this when he's captured.
Here's a simple test to see if you will enjoy this movie:
Did you find The Avengers: Age of Ultron too violent?
If you said yes to that question, you will lose your mind watching this movie because this is INSANE!!!!!!!!!!
Mad Max: Fury Road is not just a movie, but a rollercoaster. This is one thrill ride that has continuous loops and drops throughout with unexpected corks and twists along the way. It's full of action and explosions that are REAL. That's right, real. Fury Road easily has some of the best action I've seen put on screen for a while. It rarely uses CGI as it's all practical effects. A lot of times, movies abuse special effects and it all looks very fake (ex: Transformers: Age of Extinction and even the Marvel movies). However, Mad Max only has a couple of scenes in which they use CGI. Other than that, it's all practical. I applaud the director George Miller for going this route as it really differentiates from modern movies today.
People have complained that the characters aren't very well developed, but I have to disagree. I think each main character was handled very well. For example, Charlize Theron's Furiousa had an interesting backstory that played a role on her mission to save these women. Even Tom Hardy's Max was handled well. We don't really know where he came from or why he's here, but I thought adding that mystery really worked as he's a mysterious person in general. It's more of Furiousa's story rather than Max's as we discover more about this new character. I also loved Immortal Joe. The way his people worship him was handled very well and was very interesting to witness. All of the characters were portrayed beautifully on screen.
As a whole, Mad Max: Fury Road is insane, yet beautiful. It contains lovely, authentic action along with excellent characters to make up a pretty epic adventure. The movie slows down at certain points, but that's one small detail. I promise you, the moment you see the first shot you will know you're in for a treat.
I hope this gave you some excellent points on why you should see the movie. Please do as it's one of the best ones to come out this year.
