Star Trek Into Darkness 2013
So, you're watching Back to the Future and Marty breaks a scooter to turn it into a skateboard and it's awesome and Biff gets covered in shit, and then you're watching Back to the Future Part 2 and pretty much the same thing happens, only Griff has "implants" and there are hoverboards, and Griff is in deep metaphorical shit and it's still awesome because of the differences? That's Star Trek Into Darkness. It's a worthy follow up to 2009s Star Trek that boldly goes to familiar places at times, but puts its own spin on things whilst adding a whole bunch of new stuff to the mix.
It's great to see NuKirk and NuSpock develop a chemistry all of their own and really take charge of the characters now that they've had a chance to settle into them, and it's also good to see the new incarnation of Trek delineate core Trek lore like the Prime Directive, Spock's emotional-management, and the Klingons, who will probably be central to the next movie.
No way it's winning over people who hated the last film though. In fact, I'm expecting a LOT of rage...and once again, it's a wildly fun, kinetic thrill-ride, rather than the glorified ponderous TV movie some Trekkies seem to want to see. I really liked it.
Observations:
- ACTING CAPTAIN SULU! SECTION 31! KIRK HAVING A THREESOME WITH GIRLS WHO HAVE TAILS!
- That one crew member on the bridge with the white-blonde hair is my Trekfu.
- RoboCop had a far larger role than I expected, and was wonderful in it.
