Owen Hughes’s review:
Classic sci-fi b-movie about aliens that arrive on earth and resurrect the dead for reasons explained but quite ridiculous.
It's full to the brim with poor acting, poor dialogue, poor effects and a poor story, but it's actually fairly awesome overall. I honestly think it's one of the most cheesy, silly concepts of any sci-fi film I've seen, and almost comes across like they decided only right at the end to try and include some deeper meaning like it would make you forget how crap it really is.... but that's part of its charm! How could anyone possibly be expected to hate a film where Bela Lugosi is an undead old man with a cape, and (although it was my first experience seeing a film with him in it) Criswell narrating!
I also love the word 'Solaranite' and all the various attempts the characters make to pronounce it; solaranite, solarignite, solarinite. Hilarious.
It should be a terrible film, if you broke each individual aspect of the film down, you'd have a hard case trying to argue for any of them, but as a whole, they combine to make something fantastic. A bit like the Constructicons in Transformers... individually, they're a bit rubbish. Put them all together = awesome.
