Owen Hughes’s review:
Not anywhere near as good as the original, which is a shame really. The concept behind this film seems to be a bit simpler (it was never very complicated in the first place tbf) but at the same time I don't think the makers of this film had even seen the first, just read the back of the video case or something.
There was some quite good bits though. I quite liked the speech that SETH gave once he got his body. It was very epically delivered but extremely lame. Goldberg's grunts were hilariously the complete opposite of menacing. And, of course, Van Damme is brilliant at trying to juggle saving his daughter, pulling the reporter and saving the world. What a guy.
I have this in my To Watch Pile. I shall try to get to it this week.
Let me know how you get on with it. I did like aspects of it, but it was very cheesy. It treats itself less seriously than the first, which was already pretty silly to begin with.
The more recent two (Regeneration (lame) and Day of Reckoning (surprisingly good)) in the series are way too serious without any of the humour, though. They feel like very different films that have just adopted the UniSol concept.
The original is still the best. Day of Reckoning 2nd, The Return 3rd and Regeneration a very distant 4th place.
