I liked Rashamon? That's not how I remember it...

This is just a list of Japanese films that I've seen and in the order of preference. It's by no means comprehensive, I'm not that well informed on Japanese cinema, and definitely don't think of myself as any kind of expert on Asian films.

If I'm missing any you think are particularly important (expecting shouts for various Studio Ghibli films (which were omitted on purpose) and Yojimbo (omitted purely because I haven't seen it) then do say so! I'm always on the look out to add new reviews to my film diary.

It's just a bit of fun, this list. The title of the list is paraphrased from a Simpsons episode. I'm not taking it too seriously so won't be offended if someone shoots down this list.

  • No list with Japanese films should be without the insanity of House ( How weird? This weird! )

I was rather impressed with Caterpillar.

  • "Add this film to your watchlist"? You betcha.

  • It is totally bonkers. I suggest a healthy dose of booze or other narcotics to enhance the experience.

  • Well you've definitely seen more then I have. Aside from a couple Kurosawa and the aforementioned Studio Ghibli, I don't think I've seen any.

  • Well, that's nothing to be ashamed of really! But if you've never seen Godzilla, I'd definitely recommend that first. It's so much more than just a creature feature.

  • i won't blame anyone for not beeing into asian cinema, but if you want to dive into it, it will open you a wide range of extraordinary and beautiful movies. Just to name a few you maybe should try (if you already haven't) are: "survivestyle 5+", "oldboy", "Bin-Jip", "I saw the the devil", "Sparrow"... (I better stop, before i get carried away, but I'am sure, someone already has a great list) :)

  • Oldboy and I Saw The Devil are Korean aren't they? They're both on my "to watch" list anyway. The others I haven't heard of though, so I'll definitely look into them, thanks! :-)

I'm not especially avoiding Asian cinema, I quite like lots of Asian films, I just realised one day that there's a massive black hole in the number of Japanese films I've seen and thought about which ones I had seen and which I liked from that list. I've left out a few things such as Battle Royale 2, Violence Jack, Cowboy Bebop, etc as I just didn't enjoy them.

  • Its not Japanese, but Bedevilled is a fantastic example of Asian (Korean) cinema.

  • In The Mood for Love is a beautiful movie. Highly recommended
