  • Anastasia 1997

    ★★★★ Rewatched 19 May, 2013

Anastasia is considered by many to be one of Don Bluth's greatest successes, and I certainly find it enjoyable. It can't really measure up to most of the stuff Disney was doing in the 90s, but it's a fun watch and looks really good.

The historical framing is kind of neat, but ultimately doesn't do it many favors because it's hard for me to totally get over how they frame the period. Life with the Czar in power is portrayed…

  • Le Doulos 1962

    ★★★★★ Watched 18 May, 2013

Le Doulos is an awesome crime film that seamlessly bridges the gap between classic film noir and the modern crime drama. It follows multiple characters as the wend their way through the French underworld trying to make it out ahead, and alive.

Visually striking right from the start, I loved the black and white photography in this. The entire opening scene is awesome and hooks you right into the world of the film. There are plenty of angles and shadows…

  • Ghoulies II 1987

    ★★★ Watched 10 May, 2013

Ghoulies II is not very good, but it tries a lot harder than the first film. It starts out somewhat promising, with a fairly decent intro and soundtrack. The Ghoulies this time are actually out and doing things, and seem to be of a much higher quality. There are a few scenes where they do stop motion animation instead of sticking to close-ups of puppets. It even gets into some man-in-suit action.

Most of that is a mixed success, however.…
