Capricorn One 1978 ★★★

Watched Jun 04, 2008

There were several films like this in the 1970s, such as Three Days of the Condor and The Parallax View, but this comparatiely unexciting thriller about astronauts who are made to stage a Mars landing can’t seem to get the formula right, despite some decent scenes. Having Elliot Gould as a journalist getting to the bottom of things on specious clues is part of the problem, but the whole thing feels too small and low budget to be as effective as it needs to be.

  • Not a great film, but I always loved the scene where Gould flirts with Karen Black. I thought they had amazing chemistry together and wish it was used in a different movie.

  • Watched it on a whim, found it to be very enjoyable. You're right that it doesn't really reach that level of effectiveness to be truly great, but I found it to be a ton of fun and highly watchable.

@Allan Those scenes with the two of them had me laughing for sure, and the crop-duster character scene with Gould as well.

  • Yeah, I was perhaps a bit harsh as I still remember it well from watching it four years ago, so it certainly did something right.
