The Gate 1987 ★★★½

Rewatched Oct 21, 2009

This Canadian-shot production is a really effective little 1980s horror film that isn’t really appropriate for kids, despite efforts to make it “family friendly.” A lightning strike opens up a portal to hell in a kid’s backyard when his parents are away. Effectively told from the kid’s POV, demons arise from the earth for a bewildering and sometimes frightening display of effects that belie the film’s tiny budget.
