  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 06 May, 2012

So this is what a comic fanboy/girl's wet dream looks like. I am not complaining, in fact it's a compliment. The Avengers is like an all-star game in sports, and If you watched an all-star game in any sports, it's the most boring thing in the world, but The Avengers (or should I say Marvel's The Avengers) is fun and with loads of action scenes that will have many fans clamor for more.

Every character is given a little bit…

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 28 Jul, 2012

Kind of surprised that I liked it even more the second time. It's not a perfect movie, but second viewing helps clear many plot threads. Have no issue with the pacing of the film, 3 hours just flew by. In some ways, this is a better film than The Dark Knight, as TDKR doesn't have the same third act issue as TDK. Not that TDKR doesn't have its own issues, but I do give a movie with ambition a little…

  • Skyfall 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 10 Nov, 2012

SKYFALL pays tribute to past Bond films with references that will delight many Bond fans. Yet this is really an Anti-Bond film. James Bond is a fantasy, men want to be Bond because he gets into adventure, sleep with beautiful women, save the world and it looks fun. In SKYFALL, Bond is a brooding hero, a man who rarely cracks a smile, takes everything seriously; he doesn’t even seem to enjoy sleeping with a beautiful woman. It just doesn’t look…

  • Looper 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 29 Sep, 2012

While Looper isn't my favorite time traveling movies of all time (that would be La Jetee/12 Monkeys), it's definitely on my top 5. It's cleverly written and constructed. I thought I have a pretty good handle on the material 45 minutes into the movie, and then the movie changes into something different, but a lot more interesting.

Rian Johnson has always been able to craft creative stories, but Looper is his best movie, mainly because he doesn't try to get…

  • Argo 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 13 Oct, 2012

Argo Fuck Yourself. Just want to get this out of the way.

While I still consider Gone Baby Gone his best work, Argo does show that Ben Affleck is a very capable director. His ability to create tension in a story that has a pretty obvious outcome (come on now, you think they are going to make a movie about this if it has another outcome) is impressive. Individual moments shine such as the first 10 minutes of the hostage…

  • Silver Linings Playbook 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 14 Sep, 2012

TIFF Capsule: The film didn't come alive till Jennifer Lawrence shows up. She is the reason to watch SLP. I am amazed that Lawrence who is only 22 years old can project herself into a more mature character, and makes a believable partner to Bradley Cooper.

Lawrence aside, this is a winning but predictable Rom-Com (aren't all Rom-Coms predictable?). Not that there is anything wrong with that since there are so few good ones out there. It's the Jerry McGuire of this generation.

  • Prometheus 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 04 Jan, 2013

Re-watch: I was less bother by David’s ambiguous motivation throughout the movie, however I was more bothered by the increasing possibility that Lindelof never have any intention to answer the questions he sets up (i.e.: Who and why is the human race created?). Normally that’s fine, and I am not necessary looking for answers. But Lindelof’s script and Scott’s direction make the end results look more like a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be solved, even when they have no answer…

  • Prometheus 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 11 Jun, 2012

I watched Prometheus yesterday, and basically spend all the day thinking about it. I can't give it a higher rating in good conscience, there are logical plot holes so large that a truck can drive thru it (ie: I still can't figure out why David the Android (Michael Fassebender) act the way he did to a major character, which led to a series of events that shaped the movie. I read so many explanation and it still makes no sense).…

  • Moonrise Kingdom 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 10 Jun, 2012

If you like Wes Anderson, then you are going to like this movie. Similarly, if you don't like him, then Moonrise Kingdom isn't going to change your mind. Just watch 5 minutes of MK, without looking at the credits, you could have guess this is a Wes Anderson film.

Moonrise Kingdom's humor is dry, the characters are very precocious, but yet I can't help but smile throughout the film. I don't think it's Anderson's intention to make a heart-warming film,…

  • The Hunger Games 2012

    ★★½ Watched 24 Mar, 2012

A mild disappointment, perhaps it's because I re-watched Battle Royale the night before and that movie was still fresh in my mind. While I don't think The Hunger Games is a rip off of BR, BR is just a better movie, it has a lot more life to it than The Hunger Games especially the first half.

The most disappointing aspect in HG is that it never explores its theme or consequence fully. Most of the kids have never killed…

  • The Master 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 07 Sep, 2012

TIFF Capsule: I will probably need a second viewing to get a proper handle on this. Scene by scene, this is as compelling as any PTA films. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is magnetic on screen, Joquin Phoenix is perfect to play an out of control character. I am not sure what it is as a whole, (I think PTA is trying to convey conformity and control) as this is PTA's least accessible film. Still, my eyes were glued to the screen and I was never bored.

  • Iron Man 3 2013

    ★★½ Watched 05 May, 2013

My rating mostly reflects upon my ambivalence towards the IRON MAN Franchise. Shane Black did what he could with it. By isolating Tony Stark from Iron Man, it allows the movie to showcase its strongest points: RDJ’s delivering Black’s snappy dialogues and stack the deck against the heroes. Black also adds a new and welcoming spin towards a terrorist storyline and it helps that Ben Kingsley’s performance as Mandarin is such a joy to watch. However, what Black is trying…
