Phil Wheeler’s review:
The further through the 21st century we come, the more hilarious some predictions of older movies seem. But this movie feels like it has been lazy at the same time. The effects and sets are cheap and little thought has been given to the evolution of styles and tastes since the 70s.
The underlying theme of the movie is a dystopian spin on a familiar urban legend and for what it is, director Richard Fleischer (Tora! Tora! Tora!, Conan the Barbarian) weaves a good story. However I felt the story wandered occasionally and generally failed to really engage me as much as it probably could have. Charlton Heston is true to form in the futuristic role but even his acting skills are not enough to breath life into a compelling and relevant idea that just doesn't reach its potential.
