  • Pitch Perfect 2012

    ★★★ Watched 21 May, 2013

Not as biting or as original as it probably thinks it is, Pitch Perfect is still a very enjoyable film. While it does have some problems (it's 20 minutes too long and it does make an unnecessary comparison with The Breakfast Club), it still manages to successfully mine comedy out of the most formulaic of plots. Worth a watch if you can handle the genre tropes.

  • The Bourne Legacy 2012

    ★★ Watched 20 May, 2013

Despite hearing poor reviews I thought I'd check out The Bourne Legacy, partly because I enjoyed director Tony Gilroy's first feature Michael Clayton, and second because I'd watch anything with Ed Norton in it. Unfortunately the critics were right and this was a shocking disappointment. While I tried to ignore the previous Bourne films and take this on its own grounds, Gilroy insists on reminding you every other second that there is a whole other (and better) movie going on…

  • Sound City 2013

    ★★ Watched 15 May, 2013

Sound City is truly a film of two-half. The first part is quite a likable documentary; giving a pleasant introduction to the life of a studio and tracking the challenges it faced amid the changing landscape of recorded music throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Unfortunately the second act revolves chiefly around Dave Grohl dicking about in a studio, and it adds very little to the story of Sound City. It's a really shame, as it does seem that Grohl…

  • Gregory's Girl 1982

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 12 May, 2013

I'm sure there are more charming and sweeter films out there, but for the life of me I can't think of them! I'm a huge fan of Gregory's Girl. It's got wonderful characters, great warmth and a winning sense of humour. This film is my go-to reminder of what it was like to be a teenager. Just perfect!

  • Star Trek Into Darkness 2013

    ★★★½ Watched 12 May, 2013

While Abrams doesn't quite raise the bar on the originality and spark of his first outing, Into Darkness is still a fun and entertaining blockbuster. At times the film does suffer at the hands of fan-service, but it's hard to feel too let down when there's so many loud explosions taking place

  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2009

    ★½ Watched 11 May, 2013

    Absolute garbage!

  • X-Men: The Last Stand 2006

    ★½ Rewatched 08 May, 2013

    Absolute garbage!

  • X2: X-Men United 2003

    ★★★ Watched 05 May, 2013

I seem to go against popular opinion here and prefer the original X-Men film. X2 ain't that bad but it does feel a little stretched and lacks some of the easier pacing of its predecessor. This one pretty much just goes through the same motions but this time it's louder and longer. There's some good set-pieces (the White House opening, Magneto's escape etc) and all in all it's fun, but it's not too memorable or feel as 'benchmarky' as the first film.

  • X-Men 2000

    ★★★½ Watched 04 May, 2013

The superhero movie is a strange sub-genre. It seems to come in waves. For every Superman there's a Superman 3, and for every Batman a Batman and Robin. One minute you're thinking "hey, these superhero films are pretty fun", and the next, your embarrassed that you ever admitted to liking men in spandex!

Spiderman had its Spiderman 3, Blade had Blade 3 and X-Men had Last Stand. It seemed that after that I was done with superhero movies. But recently…

  • Revolutionary Road 2008

    ★★★ Watched 29 Apr, 2013

Very enjoyable and well-crafted melodrama (if perhaps a little unremarkable). Michael Shannon steals the show.

  • Iron Man 3 2013

    ★★★½ Watched 27 Apr, 2013

Unfortunately not that memorable but still very entertaining. Great 80s action feel to it and easily best in the series!

  • Brave 2012

    ★★★ Watched 22 Apr, 2013

Far too traditional to be all that noteworthy, 'Brave' is still a very enjoyable film. It's nice to see a female-centered plot for a change too.
