Phil Newton’s review published on Letterboxd:
When a soldier is sent to war his mother and wife remain, living amongst the reeds, managing to survive by killing passers by and trading their armour for millet. The arrival of new neighbour Hachi threatens this peaceful existence as the younger woman is sexually attracted to him, so mother takes dramatic steps to curtail her philandering. Made in Black & White, in glorious widescreen, Onibaba is an exceptionally captivating film to look at - the setting amongst the reeds gives the film a unique, haunting quality that can soothe or unsettle in equal measures. Whilst the film is full of deeper symbolism, the story itself is actually very minimalist and easy to follow.
