Spring Breakers 2013
Spring Breakers has made me realize something that I used to think about all the time, but have recently not thought much about. We as film fans exist in a very small and personal world. While film fans like us generally go to the theater with knowledge of what we will be seeing, the average Joe/Jane doesn't have a clue. Now I surround myself with people that either know a lot about film, or at least respect film in some…

Spring Breakers 2013
Wow. This was not was I was expecting. Where Harmony Korine’s films tend to be visceral, strange, and raw, Spring Breakers was a Malick-esque coming of age journey about four girls out to escape from the methodical life they lived to journey to find new experiences and strive towards a contemporary media driven fantasy of sex and violence with no repercussions. Over the course of the film, they begin to realize that this media representation is hollow and untrue, and…

The ABCs of Death 2013
The ABC’s of Death is a portmanteau Horror film for the Chronic ADHD sufferer. 26 shorts from 26 directors, each with a budget of $5000. It’s 2 hours that zips by at an incredible pace thanks to a surprisingly small number of duff entries. (Ti west take a bow) There’s also a minor gripe with a few directors such as Kaare Andrews who seem to have taken it as an opportunity to create a backdoor pilot for there own projects,…

The ABCs of Death 2013
26 short films by different directors, no linking device, each clip showcasing a cause of death.
The quality of this anthology is wildly variable, but I ended up liking more of it than expected. Kudos to Ti West for producing the worst film out of 26, quite an achievement. There are a handful of genuine standouts. I especially liked Marcel Sarmiento's D, Timo Tjahjanto's jaw dropping L, Brino Forzani and Helene Cattet's O, Xavier Gen's X, and Jason Eisener's Y.

Stoker 2013
Just for the technical brilliance, this film gets a four.
The script is wonderful, without any need to pander to the idea that audiences are essentially dumb and have to have things signposted. That deserves a four also.
The acting is rich, understated and even the bit parts bring colour and menace to the screen. This is a four fer sure.
The way the violence is enacted must surely be why it got an 18, because menace wouldn't push it…

Stoker 2013
Being a big fan of Chan-Wook Park's previous films (Oldboy is one of my all time favourite films ever) I had eagerly awaited this, Park's first English language film, ever since I first heard about it. And I was not disappointed.
Stoker is an absolutely glorious film. Some wonderful on-screen performances from Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode are underpinned by an exquisite screenplay that sucks you in and keeps you on your toes from the first second til…

Stoker 2013
Oldboy director Chan-wook Park's first English language film is a mini masterpiece. Impeccably directed and faultlessly acted by the three principal actors.
The story begins by giving you just enough information to have you intrigued. There are elements of 'Heathers', 'Night of the Hunter' and of course most notably Hitchcock's 'Shadow of a Doubt' of which the story follows most closely.
Written by ex-Prison Break inmate Wentworth Miller, this is a stunning piece of work with a heart of darkness.

Mama 2013
After "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and now this, the words "Guillermo Del Toro presents" are no longer anything to get excited about.
Jessica Chastain has a "cool" tshirt for every situation, including getting chased about by a ghost that looks like its from a computer game and therefore not scarey at all.
It gets an extra half star because it doesn't go down the predictable road at the end.

The Inside 2013
As far as I'm aware, this Irish horror has a group of girls filming their party and then getting hassled and raped by some loud shouty tramps, which results in some loud screaming. Then some Rec influenced demons/zombies start attacking all of them.
The video camera is then found by a guy in a pawn shop who watches the footage and decides to investigate the scene .... at night ..... and alone ..... and doesnt tell the police.
This is…

Django Unchained 2012
Instant classic. Needs many more viewings for sure, but from the very first snap zoom to the final fiery frame, it was another QT love letter to everything I adore about the medium. Seeing it at his New Beverly this weekend should give it that final half star to cement it as one of the best movies of the year in my play book.
